A Betrayal of Justice: Kairos Palestine Rejects Trump’s Ethnic Cleansing Proposal and calls for Global Action

Please read the statement issued on behalf of Palestinian Christians in response to President Trump’s plans to ethnically cleanse Gaza of its people and build a ‘Riviera on the Med’.

Kairos Palestine calls on all people of goodwill throughout the world to uphold international humanitarian law and human dignity for everybody. Irish churches must speak out against this egregious violation of international law proposed by Trump. Clearly, he did not heed the fine sermon in Washington Cathedral by Bishop Mariann Edger Budde, when she called on the President to show mercy in the exercise of power.

Israel and the United States of America have together created the ‘demolition site’ and ‘hellhole’ in Gaza that Trump speaks about. Now they have declared their intention to compound this crime by adding to it the further war crime of ethnic cleansing.

The Kairos statement points out that the new US ambassador to Israel, the fervent Christian Zionist Mike Huckabee, denies the very existence of Palestinians and gives unconditional support to the settler movement, which is illegal under international law. Unfortunately, this seems to reflect the attitudes of the new administration in the White House.

The biblical message is one that upholds justice and mercy and condemns oppression and tyranny. Kairos Ireland affirm this in their quotation from the prophet Isaiah (10:1-2) Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people.
