In our Kairos Ireland document (‘That justice and peace might embrace’), published in 2018, we pointed out that the architect of the Apartheid regime in South Africa, Hendrik Verwoerd, was in no doubt that Israel was also an apartheid society. Verwoerd stated that, ‘Jews took Israel from Arabs after Arabs had lived there for a thousand years. Israel, like South Africa, is an apartheid state.’ The Israeli human rights organisation, B’tselem, has recently concluded that the regime in force between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea is an apartheid regime. Our speaker on the 11th May, the Rev’d Brian Brown, was a prominent opponent of apartheid in South Africa and is well qualified to examine the situation in the ‘Holy Land’ from hard won experience.
